Detroit freelance photographer/2010 Savage Seminar Speaker

J. Kyle Keener is a freelance photographer based in Detroit. He has spent more than 25 years bringing the style of magazine photography to some of the nations leading newspapers. At the Detroit Free Press he was the chief photographer for 13 years. During a decade at The Philadelphia Inquirer he traveled extensively covering global news in Africa and the destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest, for which he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He is a six-time winner of the National Press Photographers Association Regional Photographer of the Year. The international Society of News Design has honored him consistently including a Gold Award for Portfolio. Keener has judged prestigious contests and lectured to photographers from around the globe.

He is a master of studio and location lighting. In today’s photojournalism world, where the opportunity to do traditional documentary work is at a premium because of shrinking photo staffs that have to do more work in less time, it is more important than ever to have excellent portraiture skills. His lecture titled “Portraits With Heart and Soul” will take attendees on a behind the scenes tour of his creative process.

Lecture Presentation by Gerd Ludwig

“A Great Photograph Touches the Soul and Broadens the Mind”

Sponsored by Canon

Gerd Ludwig’s photography captures beautifully all the complexities of life. Whether documenting children born with severe birth defects or the sweetness of an embrace, his photography resonates with the full scale of human emotion.

On assignment for National Geographic Magazine since the late 1980’s, he has covered diverse locations around the globe — from the ecological disasters of California’s Salton Sea to the origins of the Grimm Brother’s Fairy Tales in rural Germany; from Tasmania’s remote beauty, to Toronto’s multi-ethnic society. He is best known, however, as the magazine’s front man in the Former Soviet Union.

His lecture presentation will span his life’s work, from his art school days in Germany to recently published and unpublished images of Russia’s warp-speed transformation from communism to runaway capitalism — marked by bold aspirations, poignant suffering, and glittering opportunity. Each image adds a new piece to the eternal puzzle called Russia — by turns greedy and generous, stoic and exuberant, suspicious and sympathetic — and it is evident why these stunning, complex, and provocative images have garnered Gerd Ludwig’s distinction as the world’s foremost color photographer documenting this region.
